2012 The Year that was.

For our last memo of the year we're looking back at 2012 and the events that made news or meant something to us.

Summer 11/12 was one of the mildest on record meaning low claims events around Australia. However as we were still mopping up after 2 years of catastrophes prior to this the impact on rates hit this year. We really should be thankful that nothing of significance occurred during the summer as insurer capacity would have been severely tested. Tropical Cyclone Heidi struck WA but did not cause major damage. Some flooding in Northwest NSW and QLD occurred late Summer which turned out to be the costliest part of the season for insurers

Whilst Australia was spared overseas in march we witnessed the Costa Concordia running aground and the bizarre aftermath with a captain disappearing. many passengers lost their lives and the survivors struggled with compensation through the parent company and also with an unexpected virus that struck them. The Insurance bill is continuing to grow.

In Honduras in February a prison fire killed over 300 inmates. It's believed a cigarette started the fire and the ferocity of it meant that fire fighters could do nothing but watch it burns and protect neighbouring properties. A sad day for families of the inmates and a timely reminder of how easily a fire can happen. Closer to home we were moved mid year by the Brisbane house fire that costs a family everything. A number of our posts earlier this year pointed to the relative cost of Contents insurance.

Mid year it was all about the Olympic games. London turned on quite a show and the Poms showed us who was boss for a fortnight. We Aussies copped a pounding from The Mother Country for our perceived poor results and in the fall out funding for some events has been further cut back. personally anyone who makes a final in the Olympics is a super star! James Magnusson missed out on gold by a bent finger nail yet in the press had a bad event. Well done to all, it was a fantastic fortnight.

We lost some much lover faces this year. Ian 'Turps' Turpie passed away as did Footballer and Reach Ambassador Jim Stynes. Jimmy Little, Murray Rose, Darryl Cotton and Bryce Courteney were other notable losses during the year. May they rest in peace and their legacy live on.

Alright again on a personal note our beloved Melbourne Storm took the NRL premiership!! After 2 years in turmoil they showed what a gutsy professional group they are and beat The Bulldogs. If only our Hawks could have made it a double.

Keep an eye open for some marketing by us stylised at various aspects within your business. There will also be a number of speaking engagements giving us the chance to continue to educate. Look out for a special event as well that we are planning. Still in the storyboard phase but we hope it will be something local business will see value in.
